Ordinals & BSV – A Match Made in Heaven or Hell?

In the bustling world of crypto, where the currents of innovation and ideology often clash, a new conversation has emerged around the relationship between Bitcoin Satoshi Vision (BSV) and the controversial Bitcoin protocol extension, Ordinals inscriptions. A recent social media exchange between notable crypto personalities, Hodlonaut and Dan Held, touched upon the alleged connections between BSV and Ordinals, particularly in the context of the Ordinals 2023 Conference.

    Introduction to the Controversy

Is there a link between Bitcoin Satoshi Vision (BSV) and the Ordinals protocol? Crypto influencers Hodlonaut and Dan Held sparred over the potential connections, with Hodlonaut questioning the implications of BSV speakers at the Ordinals 2023 Conference, and Held dismissing any such links.

Hodlonaut pointed out the presence of BSV proponents at the Ordinals Conference, suggesting that this could indicate a relationship between BSV and Ordinals. Dan Held, on the other hand, firmly denied such connections, maintaining that, despite his comprehensive understanding and awareness of the ongoing discussions within the crypto community, he does not perceive any links between the two.

    Examining the Crypto Crossroads

This debate beckons a closer look at the facts provided by Hodlonaut. The 2023 Ordinals Conference featured speakers from diverse backgrounds, including those involved with BSV, such as Joshua Petty, CEO of Twetch, a social media platform built on the BSV blockchain. Petty, as well as Jack Liu, a contributor to a BSV-related platform, Ordsawp.io, were both among the speakers, indicating that individuals from the BSV space are indeed engaging with the broader Bitcoin community, including those interested in Ordinals.

The discussion of Ordinals, a method to inscribe digital artifacts on the Bitcoin blockchain, has brought various factions of the Bitcoin community, such as the Taproot Wizards and others, into dialogue, if not alignment. This comes at a time when the community is already exploring the implications of the Taproot upgrade, which enhances Bitcoin’s scripting capabilities and privacy.

    A Direct Connection

The presence of BSV voices at an Ordinals-focused event might not imply a direct connection or endorsement, but it certainly reflects a convergence of interests or at least a shared platform for discussion among differing Bitcoin philosophies. Whether Dan Held’s views align with this perspective or not, it’s clear that there is a connection between these two crypto ecosystems which continues to evolve, bringing them in constant clash with the majority of the Bitcoin community which has rejected both platforms.

The aversion of crypto folks towards self-proclaimed Bitcoin creator Craig Wright, also often finds them opposed to the BSV project as a whole. While it may be debated whether there’s a formal linkage between BSV and Ordinals, the participation of BSV advocates in discussions surrounding Bitcoin’s future, such as at the Ordinals 2023 Conference, underscores the intertwined relationships that exist within the crypto community. These relationships are coming into question, not for their affiliation, but for their true intentions towards Bitcoin and its community.

Dan claims there is no connection between BSV and Ordinals.

"Weird that you’re trying to make a connection when there isn’t one"
"Nope. Eyes wide open and don’t see it"
"Nope. I have very good visibility into the convo"
"Nope, I’ve got a very clear picture"

    Critique of the Ordinals Project

    1. Complexity and Practicality: The Ordinals project introduces a new way to inscribe digital artefacts on the Bitcoin blockchain. Critics argue that this adds unnecessary complexity to the Bitcoin network, which was originally intended to be a peer-to-peer cash system. The concern is that the addition of non-financial data could clutter the blockchain, leading to scalability issues and diverting from Bitcoin’s original vision.
    2. Resource Utilization: Bitcoin’s block space is a scarce resource. The insertion of large amounts of non-financial data via Ordinals could potentially increase competition for this space, driving up transaction fees and possibly crowding out financial transactions, which some purists argue should be the blockchain’s primary focus.
    3. Centralization Concerns: Some community members express concern about the centralization of influence within the Ordinals project. As with any project that has a visible leader or figurehead, there is the potential for the project to become heavily influenced by that individual’s vision and decisions, which could lead to governance issues.

    Critique of Udi Wertheimer

    image 113
    1. Leadership Style: As the leader of the Taproot Wizards project, Udi Wertheimer’s background as an ex IDF Communications Officer might be seen as a double-edged sword. Critics might argue that someone used to an authoritative or top-down style is not compatible with the traditionally decentralized ethos of the crypto community.
    2. Influence on Project Direction: Wertheimer’s strong personality and strange vision for the Taproot Wizards project can be polarizing. Detractors might say that this leads to a narrow focus on the project’s direction, potentially at the expense of broader community consensus or alternative ideas.
    3. Community Engagement: Effective communication is critical in leading a decentralized project. Critics might point out that if the leader does not engage sufficiently with the community or fails to address their concerns transparently, it can lead to mistrust and skepticism about the project’s objectives and execution.

While the Ordinals project has garnered attention for its approach to digital artifacts on the Bitcoin blockchain, it has not been without its critics. Concerns typically revolve around the implications of its technical innovations for the Bitcoin network and the true intentions of its figurehead, Udi Wertheimer. It’s important to note that these critiques are not universally held and represent one side of a multifaceted conversation within the diverse crypto community.
